Wanted - 1st generation iPhone

I have been using the iTouch for 2 years now to control Homeseer.
I need to replace my cell phone, but I don't use it enough to justify buying a new iPhone and the AT&T cell phone plan. (AT&T coverage in my area is poor). So I am wondering if it makes sense to buy an older (used) iPhone that I could use for WIFI control of Homeseer and possibly make calls via another service provider (via an unlocked iPhone). Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

Certainly sounds good to me. I used a first gen iPhone with T-Mobile via jailbrake/unlock with no issues. I hear to you can even use them on prepay plans with data! You can find first gens on ebay for a decent price now. Good Luck

Apple is selling refurb 8gb iphones for $49 while supplies last.

Where do you see that? You got a link? The only refurbed 8gb Apple has is the current (3g)model for $179

Did you do the jailbreak? I checked eBay and saw several used iPhones for sale in the $150-175 price range. If I would buy one, could I jailbreak it myself?

yep, I jailbroke/unlocked all the iPhones I owned (3- fist gen 3G and 3gs) I just jailbroke my 3gs. It is VERY easy using the pwnage tool. Within 30minutes you'll be done. Just putting your phone into DFU mode and clicking a few button is required.....
