Smile New Chumby One at $99.00

I know the Chumby has been talked about before and I am wondering if anyone is using it for Home Automation Status?

Chumby Industries now has a new Chumby One out at $99.00 . It is more affordable but only has one USB port and a slightly smaller screen. It does however have a built in FM tuner and faster processor.

For $100, i went ahead and ordered one.

Check out all the cool things it can do at http://www.chumby.com/

I really do wish I could use mine a little easier for automation. I don't know if any changes have been made since, but one thing that bugged me is that I couldn't control what screen it was on remotely. I'd love to have it showing a clock, but when someone rings my doorbell, I need to redirect it to a page that shows who's outside. As it sits now, it's an overpriced alarm clock.

I'm sure a flash application could be written for a little more HS experience, but that's beyond me.

I love the new $99 price tag, makes me think I should pick up another for work, just because you can still do cool stuff with it.

The fact that it's linux based, if hs ever writes a hstouch linux version it would work, or maybe someone with a little linux know-how could make some hacks to force screen changes and sound similar to how the Audrey plug-in worked.

I'm sure you could display a page, the problem comes in when you want to use other existing Chumby widgets.

An example is using some of the really neat clock designs they have.

If my doorbell rang while one of those widgets were up, I wouldn't have a way to force my chumby away from the clock screen and to the webcam widget. There is a webcam widget, but I can't get it to popup without manual interaction, or just waiting for the widget to eventually cycle.

If you don't want to use chumby widgets, I'm sure you could have a webpage displayed formatted for the chumby that would be quite usable.

There is an HS touch Linux beta floating around here. I hear it works pretty well. I've not used the chumba so I'm not certain which distro it uses and if other packages could easily be added.
