Default homeseer on desktop file access

i have windows xp desktop running homeseer and jon00.
everything under homeseer works smoothly, i routinely use a laptop and iphone to access homeseer functions.

however when i try to access any other files on the computer from my local network, i cannot.

eg: all my music files are also stored on the same computer running the homeseer software in a folder call desktop/d:/music.

from my laptop whenever i try to acesss -- desktop, it directs to me to the homeseer start/welcome page, i cannot browse/explore the files on that computer from my local network. now if i use a third party program like itunes/windows media player etc to play those music files, they work, indicating it is not a firewall problem.

any ideas???

Only files in the HTML directory are going to be accessable via the web. You can enable the option named Allow "../" File Access: by selecting setup > Web Server Tab. Then you can access these files by using something like ../scripts/scriptname.txt

You can also use my Remote file grabber utility that allows you to browse and download files anywhere on your network via the Homeseer web server.

Why not map a drive to C$? You'll get everything then!

u guys r going to laugh at my naiveity, but i am a rank amateur.
so please explain a bit. (thanks in advance)

when i shared a folder on my laptop(vista) via folder properties, and then i go to desktop(xp),my network places, that folder shows up. i can browse the files under there, open them etc.

on the other hand, when i shared a folder from the desktop, it does not show up under laptop/mynetwork places. only desktop shows up, and when i click on that, it goes to homeseer start page.

homeseer on desktop is on c: drive.
i have fragmented a d: drive on the same harddrive that holds music/photos etc, that i would like to access on my laptop from time to time.

thanks for your time guys.

If I have this right, your trying to access some files on an XP machine (running HS) from a Vista PC via Windows Explorer (rather that through a HS interface)? If so i've seen drives come and go in my network places before for no reason - not sure why, think it may be something to do with workgroups.

Try going into the 'run' command and typing

\\PC Name\Share Name

IE \\Server\Music - this has always worked for me. If that works you can just type \\PC Name and see the folders that are shared, right click and map it to a network drive if you feel that will help.
