TR40 Serial Thermostat / Trane Thermostat / Heat Pump

    Hey everyone.
I am having a new Carrier heat pump installed the next couple of weeks.
I wanted to use my serial TR40 but the installer said I need the Carrier thermostat because the heat pump system needs to know the outside temperature in order to best manage the system.

So I believe I have two choices:
    1. The Carrier thermostat has manual Occupied, Away, and Night buttons on the control unit. So one choice I have is to wire a relay across each of those buttons so HS can tell the system which mode to be in.
    2. I could mount the thermostat heads near one another. Then I would set the Carrier to a fixed heat and cool set point. Then I would wire the TR40 control box in between the Carrier thermostat and the heat pump using external relays.

Are there any faults seen with either of the two above options or does anyone have another idea?

    Appreciate it! ~Bill
