VoiceMail answering blocked by fax machine

Hope we can overcome this - would make life much simplier. PCI modem hears the incoming ring, but as my downstream fax machine starts "listening" for a fax tone, HSP see an offhook, then onhook condition. The voicemail never answers. If I disconnect the fax ( or any other device that listens - like spa control ), then voicemail picks up fine. Is there any way to tell HSP to ignore the passive "listening" devices ? I know the modem deals with voltage change to recognize on/off hook - can resistors or something be used to help mask these "listening" devices? Thanks in advance - BRS

I don't know whether this will help in your situation or not, but my fax machine has an option of "do you have an answering machine on the same line?". When you specify "yes" I think it changes the # of rings required.
